Himalayas have nearly 15,000 glaciers and it is one of the biggest navigator place under ice. It is approximated that about 34,000 sq. km., about 18 % of the Himalayas is always capped with ice. A normal Himalayan glacier has the potential of nearly an Eleventh of a cubic km. But to type a huge dam, even a normal glacier can offer enough water. And huge glaciers like Gangotri can even complete public dams Bhakhra dam the three times.
But there is not well known about the Himalayan glaciers. There is a very little information about the exact volume of water that is recieved by the Indian waterways in the form of rain, undergroung water, snow and water from the reducing of glaciers. Usualy glaciers start reducing in the monsoon time. So this system lend water to those areas or waterways where monsoon is shaky, thus control the balance very well. This system also lend many waterways a amazing boost in water level in monsoon time and causes floods. Glaciers are called ‘Shigri’ in local language. Some of the important glaciers are as under.

Bada Shigri
Bada Shigri is the biggest glacier in Himachal Pradesh. It is in the Chandra area of Lahaul and it nourishes the river Chenab. Bada Shigri glacier is more than 25 km. lengthy and about 3 km. extensive. It can be found on the center hills of the main Himalayan range.It is also assisted by many little tributary glaciers. It is enclosed by great hills from three factors. It is said that this glacier established Chandertal lake by resulting in a significant damage in Chadra area in 1936.
Bada Shigri glacier was overcome by all females mountaineers in 1956. It was further efficiently trekked by Stephenson in 1956. There are variety of popular glaciers in Chandra area in Lahaul. Some of them are Chhota Shigri ( indicates Small Glacier ), Kulti, Shpting, Pacha, Damage Karmo, Tapn, Gyephang, Bolunag, Shili and Shamundri. Gyephang is the main deity of Lahaul area and the Gyephang glacier is known as after him. It is complete of snowfall all the season. It is regarded as the Manimahesh of Lahaul.
